The security sector forms a substantial portion of the workforce in the UK, and is rapidly expanding. Today, there are more than 4 million CCTV cameras installed throughout the UK, and security is a rising concern for government and private citizens alike. About half a million people are currently employed in the sector of private and personal security, which contributes about 6 billion to the UK economy each year.
Common positions listed by recruitment agencies involve corporate security, retail loss prevention, and private guarding, but positions are also available in a diversity of specialties ranging from video analysis to software development.
It is common for security professionals to have a background in law enforcement or military, but by no means is it a requirement. Academic degrees and qualifications are seen as an advantage for many candidates, but relevant industry experience is typically far more important for employment prospects.
Salaries start at about 15K for entry-level jobs, and can exceed 53K in the highest paying positions. The overall average is about 28K throughout the UK, but about 20% of the workforce earns an annual income of 40K or higher.
Salaries tend to be particularly high in the North East and in Northern Ireland.
